This is a very nice pointer. I've always shaded things as if they are all curved so far.

I actually use burn and dodge tool at the moment for basic shading. Hmm..I may have to check how linear dodge/multiply combo would look then!

Wow, wonderful. And very creepy lol. The backgroud outshines your war a bit though. Btw, do we call you Charliepai now?

Generally you want to use those as little as possible, they can do strange things to colours and tend to flatten images.

Yeah I heard that about them actually lol. Wasnt using them initially. But I keep an open mind, some techniques make use of them quite well (last three full body drawings-including WIP one- I have used of burn, dodge tool in non straightforward way. Will try multiply as Charliepai said). At the same time I am open for better methods to improve. Always am

I'll see what I can do, though I'm not the best at explaining things.
@Raven: Like Widow said, avoid the burn and dodge tool. It's nice to use sometimes, but it has that nasty drawback of making uneven value lines whenever you move the mouse back and forth. At least with the linear dodge and multiply setting, you don't have to worry about mis-matched lines appearing when you move about.
Plus, using a palette of assorted colors is more visually interesting than burning and dodging.
@Yasmine: I'll probably be erasing a few portions of the far left hand side and bringing up more focus on the opposite. Not to mention more leaping flames and banners behind him. That should bring out a bit more attention on Iron, though I personally feel he's already a primary focus as he takes up 1/3 of the layout and is more detailed than the gents in the back.
And I guess Charliepai is now widely accepted on behalf of Bebe.

I think the real reason dodge and burn is frown upon is because it can lead to weird mismatches in saturation :P. Generally midtones are more saturated, but with burn and dodge, it can either make it look grey or sometimes even way too saturated. Either way, it doesn't give you much control

*to Blue and Charliepai*
Got it. So ..uhm..this may sound stupid but you shade using linear dodge and multiply by putting your brush to these settings right? (at least that's how I understood it)

I can't speak for Blue for what technique he uses to shade. But for myself, yes, I constantly switch the brush between those two settings.

I may go back later to it, not too sure though. I didn't want to go overboard with the disgusting boils so I just gave the poor guy to the left a big bony claw. In any case, I sure wouldn't want to touch him and get that garbage on me.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to say this.
Next up: Currently a toss up between a Asura/Golem or Smilin's Sin. I'll think it over when I'm not so damn tired

Iron scared him off with his fierce ferocity. That and Lu Bu is a chump.

woah .. Iron (+ his Hammer~!) are suitably imposing ..
I like how the monstie at front is out of focus, brings more attention to Iron ..
~ but what totally steals the scene are your semidetailed warriors, mouthing warchants & advancing out of the darkness~!!
In all the pics in this series, the setting enhances the characters and this one especially so ~ I particularly love your night sky .. and your chop is a new touch :}

I stopped using burn and dodge tool lol. Well I use it for really small detailed shading stuff , not as extensively as before. I actually got a tip to use overlay 20% opacity (color black or darkest ambient color) for shading and it seems to look nice. I now use multiply sometimes too as you said.
